An Open Letter to Enneagram Ones

Dear One,

I'll keep this short. I don't want you to feel like reading this is a bad use of your time. After all, your time is quite precious. As you know, we have it only in such limited supply and we must choose wisely how we spend it.

What if the universe operated along the strict lines of right and wrong? I know you like to believe that it works that way, but I think that deep-down, if you will be honest with yourself, you'll admit that reality doesn't always line up with morality. Now, I agree, it might be better overall if it did, but that is simply not the world we live in.

So, my best advice for you today is to accept the reality of things. Sometimes the world isn't black and white. Sometimes a choice isn't just right or wrong. Nothing is ever actually perfect, and that includes you.

But here is the truth that should put a smile on your face: imperfect things are deeply loved and valued every day. Perfect isn't the opposite of imperfect. The opposite of imperfection is sterile. And no one ever really loved something for its sterility. People love flowers that are asymmetrical. They love people who let them down but then who pursue relationship anyway. We love games that we sometimes lose. We love eating enough tacos that it makes us feel awful.

At the end of the day, you don't need to be perfect. You need to be loved. And we love things that are brave and honest enough to be imperfect.
